Knitting Classes: Summer/Fall 2017

PROJECT CLASS with Sydney
THURSDAYS, 7 – 9 pm |
Session 4: July 6, 13, 20, 27 and August 3, 10, 17 & 24
Session 5: September 7, 14, 21, 28 and October 5, 12, 19, 26

Turn your knitting frustration into a fun evening! Sydney will help you work through any challenges to finish your project successfully. Participants attend any 6 classes out of the 8 scheduled.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $95 per session.


KNIT CLUB FOR KIDS with Sara
WEDNESDAYS, 4 – 5 pm |
June 14 - October 25

This drop-in Knit Club is designed for kids aged 8 – 12 of all levels and abilities. Beginners will learn how to cast on and knit a garter stitch scarf. Ready to go beyond the basics? Come to class with your ideas and Sara will help you find the perfect pattern for your next project.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $15 per session or $10 each for 5 or more classes when pre-registered; plus supplies.

August 9: Learn to Read Your Knitting

Expand your knitting skills this summer! If you’ve mastered the knitting basics, this class will help you move on to a complex project. Working together on a lace scarf pattern, we’ll focus on deciphering pattern abbreviations and instructions, creating stitches with yarn overs (yos), and selecting the right yarn, needles and knitting tools for the project.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $25 per class; plus supplies.


TIFFANY NECKLACE with Stephanie

A simple, elegant necklace makes a wonderful gift or treat for yourself--and it's fast and easy to knit! Bring your favorite combination of Stacy Charles Stella and size 6 beads, and Stephanie will teach you the rest.

FAIR ISLE TOPPERS with Darcie
SUNDAYS, 3 – 5 pm |
August 20, 27 and September 17

Learn two-color (Fair Isle) knitting techniques by making a tam or hat. You can make a pattern from our collection and choose your own wonderful colors from from a selection of traditional Shetland yarns. You could also choose one of the unique hat patterns designed for the annual Shetland Wool Week.
Level: Intermediate; must be able to cast on/bind off, knit, purl and understand basic knitting in the round techniques. Cost: $65 plus supplies.


EMBRACE THE HOOK: LEARN TO CROCHET with Stephanie

Be the boss of your loops! If you’ve been intimidated by crochet patterns, now is the time to embrace the hook and expand your repertoire of skills. From trendy and embellished crocheted hats to feminine edgings on knits, crochet is both fun and liberating. We’ll learn basic stitches and get started on one or more simple projects.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $60 per class; plus supplies.


HOW TO READ TO CROCHET: ROWAN AFGHAN CAL with Stephanie

Learn how to read written British crochet patterns as you make gorgeous granny squares designed by Rowan’s Lisa Richardson. Crochet-a-long as many or as few of the patterns as you wish—the finished project is up to you!

Level: Intermediate. Cost: $20; plus supplies (pattern included).


CHOOSE YOUR OWN SWEATER ADVENTURE with Sara

September 13, 20, 27; October 4, 11, 18, 25 and November 1

Are you ready to knit your first sweater? Or tackle a more challenging pattern? In this open-ended class, Sara will help you find the perfect match of pattern and yarn, and troubleshoot questions during your knitting. You may choose a CustomFit pattern or bring any sweater pattern you're interested in knitting.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $95, plus supplies.


FLAPPER FABULOUS BEADED NECKLACE with Stephanie

September 24

Learn to knit the Gatsby Necklace, a beautiful 1920s-era inspired piece that is a great introduction to beads and short rows--and makes a stunning gift for a special person in your life. Once you've mastered the pattern, you can easily experiment with different yarns and beads for an exciting variety of looks.

Level: Advanced beginner. Cost: $30 (includes pattern), plus supplies.

 


BEGINNING WEAVING with Laura
MONDAYS, 2:30 – 5 pm |
October 2, 9, 23, 30

In this class you'll learn the basics of weaving. You'll start by winding a warp before beaming and threading an 8-harness table loom for a sampler. You wil also learn good weaving technique, how to read a weaving draft, determine sett, calculate yarn requirements, and finish your sampler. This class is designed for those who have never woven before or those that are looking for a basic refresher. Loom and equipment rental are included in the class fee.

Level: Advanced beginner. Cost: $125, plus supplies.

 


LEARN TO KNIT BEGINNER BASICS with Shellye
WEDNESDAYS, 7 - 9 pm |

Session 2: November 8 & 15

Learn the fundamentals of knitting, and gain the experience and confidence you'll need to successfully tackle your first knitting project.

Level: Absolute beginners and long-lost knitters looking to brush up on the basics. Cost: $50, plus $10 materials fee.


GO TO THE MATTRESSES: FEARLESS SEAMING with Clementine
SATURDAY, 10 am - 1 pm |
October 28

Gather your courage and tackle the mattress stitch once and for all! Clementine will teach you three different joins using the mattress stitch. Homework to be completed before class: 3 stockinette swatches, 5 in. by 5 in., bound off. Level: Advanced beginner; must know basic knitting techniques. Cost: $35, plus supplies.


LEARN TO KNIT: CONTINENTAL HAT with Clementine

October 29, November 5, 12 & 19

First-time knitter? Or are you looking to switch from English to Continental knitting? Clementine uses a basic hat pattern to teach you the fundamentals of Continental knits and purls as well as knitting in the round, ribbing, and decreases. By the time you close the top of your hat, you’ll be a proficient Continental knitter! Level: Beginner. Cost: $95, plus supplies.


MAGIC LOOP CLINIC with Clementine
SATURDAY, 10 am - 12 noon |
December 2

Learn the foundations of the most efficient way to knits all circumferences in the round: Magic Loop! All you need is a ball of worsted weight yarn and an appropriately sized needle with a 40″ cord and the desire to learn this fast technique. Magic loop can be used to make gloves, socks, hats, sleeves…anything with less than a 16″ circumference. Level: Advanced beginner; must know basic knitting techniques. Cost: $25, plus supplies.

We do our best to help you any time you come with project challenges–if you need more focused attention, or want to be sure someone will be available to help, the Drop-in sessions are for you! We’ve recently added more sessions, and limited participants to 4 people to be sure you get the attention you need.

Hit a rough patch in your pattern? Made a frustrating mistake? Our expert advice will get you back on track. $10 payable to Uncommon Threads.

Private Lessons
Time slots available:

1st and 3rd Sunday, 2 – 4 p.m.

When you need to learn or refresh a technique, demystify a complicated pattern or revive a “vintage” project, private lessons are the best choice. Sign up for one-on-one sessions with Sara, half-hour minimum. $15 half-hour, register in advance.

We’re making the switch to lighter-weight yarns and fibers as the weather gets warm! Our classes offer great inspiration as well as technical support and encouragement for your more challenging works in progress.

Registration for classes requires full payment. Please call the shop (650-941-1815) or come in person to register. Class size is limited. Sorry, no refunds on class fees; no make-ups are available for missed classes.
