Knitting Classes: Fall 2017

PROJECT CLASS with Sydney
THURSDAYS, 7 – 9 pm |
Session 6: November 2, 9, 16, 30 and December 7, 14, 21, 28

Turn your knitting frustration into a fun evening! Sydney will help you work through any challenges to finish your project successfully. Participants attend any 6 classes out of the 8 scheduled.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $95 per session, or $15 per class in Nov/Dec (pre-registered.)


KNIT CLUB FOR KIDS with Sara
WEDNESDAYS, 4 – 5 pm |
June 14 - December 20 (no class Nov. 15 & 22)

This drop-in Knit Club is designed for kids aged 8 – 12 of all levels and abilities. Beginners will learn how to cast on and knit a garter stitch scarf. Ready to go beyond the basics? Come to class with your ideas and Sara will help you find the perfect pattern for your next project.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $15 per session or $10 each for 5 or more classes when pre-registered; plus supplies.


HOW TO READ TO CROCHET: ROWAN AFGHAN CAL with Stephanie

Learn how to read written British crochet patterns as you make gorgeous granny squares designed by Rowan’s Lisa Richardson. Crochet-a-long as many or as few of the patterns as you wish—the finished project is up to you!

Level: Intermediate. Cost: $20; plus supplies (pattern included).

CHOOSE YOUR OWN SWEATER ADVENTURE with Sara

September 13, 20, 27; October 4, 11, 18, 25 and November 1

Are you ready to knit your first sweater? Or tackle a more challenging pattern? In this open-ended class, Sara will help you find the perfect match of pattern and yarn, and troubleshoot questions during your knitting. You may choose a CustomFit pattern or bring any sweater pattern you're interested in knitting.

Level: Beginner. Cost: $95, plus supplies.


BEGINNING WEAVING with Laura
MONDAYS, 2:30 – 5 pm |
Session 1: October 2, 9, 23, 30
Session 2: November 6 & 13, December 4 & 11
Session 3: January 29, February 5, 12, 26

In this class you'll learn the basics of weaving. You'll start by winding a warp before beaming and threading an 8-harness table loom for a sampler. You wil also learn good weaving technique, how to read a weaving draft, determine sett, calculate yarn requirements, and finish your sampler. This class is designed for those who have never woven before or those that are looking for a basic refresher. Loom and equipment rental are included in the class fee.

Level: Advanced beginner. Cost: $125, plus supplies.

 


LEARN TO KNIT BEGINNER BASICS with Shellye

Learn the fundamentals of knitting, and gain the experience and confidence you'll need to successfully tackle your first knitting project.

Level: Absolute beginners and long-lost knitters looking to brush up on the basics. Cost: $50, plus $10 materials fee.


GO TO THE MATTRESSES: FEARLESS SEAMING with Clementine

Gather your courage and tackle the mattress stitch once and for all! Clementine will teach you three different joins using the mattress stitch. Homework to be completed before class: 3 stockinette swatches, 5 in. by 5 in., bound off.

LEARN TO KNIT: CONTINENTAL HAT with Clementine

First-time knitter? Or are you looking to switch from English to Continental knitting? Clementine uses a basic hat pattern to teach you the fundamentals of Continental knits and purls as well as knitting in the round, ribbing, and decreases. By the time you close the top of your hat, you’ll be a proficient Continental knitter!

This charming pattern from Churchmouse is an unusual twist on traditional socks and makes a lovely gift for the holidays! You'll learn how to knit in the round with double-pointed needles and work the invisible Kitchener stitch. Go colorful with one skein of Koigu Premium Merino, or luxurious with one ball of String Blossom.

Do you find socks intimidating? This beginner sock class uses a worsted-weight yarn to make the process simpler. In this class, you'll learn how to use DPNs, knit a sock cuff-down, knit German short-rows, turn a heel and close the toe without the dreaded Kitchener stitch.

Learn the foundations of the most efficient way to knits all circumferences in the round: Magic Loop! All you need is a ball of worsted weight yarn and an appropriately sized needle with a 40″ cord and the desire to learn this fast technique. Magic loop can be used to make gloves, socks, hats, sleeves…anything with less than a 16″ circumference.

ESSENTIAL CAST-ON & BIND-OFF TECHNIQUES with Afifa Sayeed

Different types of knitting projects need different types of edges -- some edges need to be stretchy, some extra-sturdy and others decorative. Various edges are achieved by working different cast-ons and bind-offs. In this class, you'll learn 10 essential casting-on and binding off techniques step-by-step, and also learn when to use each one. Cast on techniques include: cable cast-on, backwards loop, I-cord and provisional cast on; bind-offs are: K2tog bind off, picot, I-cord and three needle bind-off.

Level: Advanced beginner; must know basic knit and purl stitches, long-tail cast-on and basic bind-off. Cost: $50; plus supplies.

BEGINNING RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING with Laura
MONDAY, 2 - 5 pm |
January 29, February 5, 12 & 26

Come learn the ins and outs of weaviing on a portable rigid heddle loom! We will cover: project planning, warping, weaving and finishing techniques. Bring your own already assembled rigid heddle loom and tools, 8 dpi rigid heddle, and approx. 500 yards total worsted weight yarns. If you don’t have a loom, a limited number available for use during class, reservation required. We will take a short break, bring your own lunch or plan to pick up something close by.   This class is for beginners or those that want to refresh and refine their skills. Please pick up the materials list when you sign up for the class.

We’ve recently added more sessions, and limited participants to 4 people to be sure you get the attention you need.

When you need to learn or refresh a technique, demystify a complicated pattern or revive a “vintage” project, private lessons are the best choice. Sign up for one-on-one sessions with Sara, half-hour minimum. $15 half-hour, register in advance.

Sweater season is just around the corner--take advantage of our knit, crochet and weaving expertise to have your best fall ever! Our classes offer great inspiration as well as technical support and encouragement for your more challenging works in progress.
