The Yarn Tourist

Last summer our family spent some time driving around Alaska. One afternoon we pulled into a roadside restaurant and our 2-year old piped up from the backseat: “Are we getting yarn?” No matter where we are in the world, knitters and fiber enthusiasts of all stripes tend to seek out the local yarn source, eager to try something new or just make up for an oversight in packing. Even if you aren’t traveling to an exotic location this summer, you can still experience the world through yarn right here at home–just bring your needles, hooks and a sense of adventure to Uncommon Threads, we’ll do the rest!

 Tricotez-vous Francais?

Confessions of a francophile: my ears perk up when I hear French spoken, and I’m likely to swoon when the latest Bergere de France pattern books arrive. Soyez les bienvenues a notre “soiree tricot”–I welcome you to our French-themed Knit Night on Friday, July 11in time for Bastille Day celebrations. We’ll enjoy a light aperitif, snacks, and couture-inspired designs from Bergere de France and other French favorites you’d like to share with the group. Gorgeous summer sweater samples from Bergere are on display in the shop and fall looks will arrive any day. The breezy striped sweater below is knit in Ecoton, which will be 10% off as our Fresh Pick on Thursday, July 10–or get a jump on fall with a stunning cabled jacket in Magic+Thanks to our generous “amis” at Bergere de France, everyone who attends will receive a free copy of the 2013/14 Creations pattern book and color card!

 British Invasion

I’m honored and thrilled to welcome Rowan designer Sarah Hatton to the shop on Wednesday, July 23 for a book signing, trunk show and workshop on Understanding Lace. If you’ve been a fan of Rowan patterns for a while, chances are good that you have a Sarah Hatton design in your closet already–her garments are shape-conscious and flattering on women of all ages and sizes. I’ve been revisiting her recent Knitted Scarves & Shrugs book, as well as her many Rowan Studio patterns–and her latest designs are found in Simple Shapes Panama10 Simple Crochet Projects, and just-released Vogue Early Fall to name a few.

For more knit and crochet fashion straight from London, look no further than Pom Pom Quarterly–the styles are current but not overly trendy, and presented with an English aesthetic more hipster than homey. Throw in some well-written articles on technical skills and soul-soothing recipes, and you have the makings of an exciting new favorite knitting journal.

 Dutch Color

Punchy color and bold stitches make Hoooked Ribbon XL a fast, fun yarn for all kinds of accessories and home decor projects. Baskets, poufs, pillows, rugs, bags–anything goes when you want to brighten your environment with cheery handmade accents. The rug shown below from Dandelion Days is one of my favorites; imagine joining several in different colors for maximum impact!

 Mother Bear KAL

Every child appreciates the comfort of a cozy bear, and the Mother Bear Project has delivered almost 100,000 hand-knit and crocheted bears to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, including Zimbabwe (flag above). Join Esther and Ellen in July to knit or crochet a bear to donate, or give to a special child in your life. Let your imagination run free as you create a one-of-a-kind bear!

 Happy Birthday, USA
