Why We Love Rowan

I confess: I’m obsessed with Rowan. I think it happened a few winters ago when they released Magazine 48, with the Russian Dolls feature. The colors, textures and styling of that issue were so beautiful and transporting, for me it was like viewing a breathtaking landscape or a masterful sculpture.

Best of all, that artistic vision was (and still is) accessible to anyone willing to pick up needles and yarn. Season after season, Rowan gives us world-class design that is both current and classic, and highest-quality yarns that will stand the test of time. In October we’re offering you three ways to experience Rowan style up close and hands-on–I invite you to join us and enjoy these exceptional events!

For one weekend only, you can see, touch and try on some of the gorgeous styles from Rowan 56Simple Shapes LimaRowan Finest CollectionSarah Hatton’s Online Collection, and more–our generous friends at Rowan are sending us a robust trunk show of sweaters and accessories, plus a giant box of extra yarn for tasting and door prizes! The pieces go on display starting Saturday morning, October 4, and the yarn tasting will be on Sunday, October 5 from 3 – 5 p.m. Knit or crochet from our sample ball, or try a “take-out taste” to work on at home–all free of charge. Kaffe Fassett Mystery KAL

Exuberant, extravagant, and joyous are just a few words that barely begin to describe the legendary color aesthetic Kaffe Fassett is known for around the world. So when I received Rowan’s announcement of a new knit-a-long designed by Kaffe, I hesitated about two seconds–and only that long because I needed to order the yarn to cover the four magnificent colorways: brown, turquoise, red and pastel (the first three are shown below.)

At last count, four other staff besides me will be knitting the afghan, and we’d love to share the adventure with you! The first pattern clue will be released October 1 through Rowan–see the link above to register–and we encourage you to drop by the shop on Tuesdays during the day or Open Knit Night to knit-along informally with us. There are also pillow options if you prefer a smaller project. I’m looking forward to working with Pure Wool Worsted for the first time, and I can’t wait to see how the colors will unfold. For more information on the KAL, view Rowan’s introductory video on YouTube.

Magic Ball – Concentrating on Color with Brandon Mably

The tasty cherry on top of our Rowan sundae is a one-day color workshop on Tuesday, October 21 with the talented and charming Brandon Mably of the Kaffe Fassett Design Studio. You’ll get to know first-hand his fearless approach to mixing color and enjoy an extraordinary day that will inspire you to think creatively about your color choices. This is a hands-on knitting experience, so leave your inhibitions at home and come ready to make mistakes and get messy! Please note that the shop will be closed all day October 21 to accommodate the workshop. Farewell to Yarns

Once again, we’re making room for new yarns by clearing out a few discontinued and underappreciated yarns. Starting October 1, save 30% – 50% off Berroco Blackstone Tweed, Berroco Lustra, Jamieson DK, Jil Eaton Minnow Merino and Trendsetter Blossom. (All but the Jamieson are pictured below–there are too many colors of DK to fit in this format!) As in previous clearance sales, you’ll save 30% off 1 – 9 balls, 40% off 10 or more, and 50% off when you buy all the remaining balls of a single color, regardless of quantity or dye lot. All clearance sales are final and discounts cannot be combined.
